In the spring of 2009 two national newspapers published the most up-to-date figures relating to the numbers of children with English as a second language as being approximately 900,000, and one included a statement from John Dunford, the then general secretary of the Association of School and College Leaders: Children who come to this country speaking English as a second language are an inspiration to native British children . .
