He attempts to get at the problem by examining the logical structure of contemporary theism and suggests that this can only be understood when it is realised that in entering the modern world ACCEPTANCE AND REJECTION 31 theism had to face two successive crises, firstly in the seventeenth century and secondly in the nineteenth.
