31 Kelly’s rapid rise at Millington shows that in the first half of the twentieth century the advertising industry offered educated, middle-class women with drive and determination the opportunity to build successful business careers, despite having little training in the industry’s skills and techniques. 32 By 1928 his agency was producing advertisements for English brands such as G. C. 33 In 1931 Millington started the ‘Millionton’ radio station in partnership with Reuters. According to Singapore’s Straits Times, Millington deserved ‘most of the credit for having converted the Chinese to an appreciation of Western advertising art’.
