But hers was an exceptional passage into adulthood, for it was shaped in every imaginable way by the trials of war. Stone thus offers her readers a female version of the classic war story of personal challenge, courage, and resultant growth. The trajectory she follows in her tale, her ultimate arrival at new insight and new appreciation of the sources of happiness, gives the diary a structure that raises at least some questions about the history of the text itself.
