It is at the heart of the ‘unitary’ mode of social relations to the world economy. The ‘civic’ mode is ideal-typically cosmopolitan. From sophists and cynics (who stood between polis, above citizens) to enlightenment philosophers (citizens of the cité de l’esprit who scorned real cities) and contemporary cosmopolites (who dwell in global conferences, universal exhibits, digital cities and other interstitial non-lieux), cosmopolitans have stood outside, or above, the miseries of context. From their miradors, they have viewed cities with detachment, as abstracted, bundled and levelled spaces where could be installed ‘geometric freedom’ (Le Corbusier 1994 ).
